The Powerdriver Review
October 29, 2005
The current NWA & TNA Champs were as follows:
NWA World Champion: Rhino (10/23/2005)
NWA World Tag Team Champions: America’s Most Wanted (10/22/2005)
TNA X-Division Champion: AJ Styles (9/11/2005)
Your hosts are Mike Tenay and Don West.
Abyss (w/James Mitchell) vs. Lance Hoyt
Both guys should be in foul moods after losing twice in the same night. Back and forth blows to start. They head to the floor where Hoyt hits the pescado on Abyss. Hoyt meets the guardrail though. Back in, Abyss avalanches Hoyt and pounds away. Hoyt mounts a comeback, but Abyss Chokeslams him down. A chair gets in the ring and gets booted into Abyss. Cover by Hoyt, 1-2-NO! How is that fair? Mitchell pulls Hoyt off the pin. That causes him to give chase right back into a GOOZLE. Hoyt fights him off, but runs right into the BLACK HOLE SLAM for the win. (3:46) Good ‘big guy’ opener. Out comes the bag of tacks, but Sabu shows up and scares Abyss away with barbed wire wrapped around his arm. WHAT. *½
Mike Tenay and Don West announce that due to the equipment malfunction during the Ultimate X match at Bound for Glory, there will be a rematch to determine the #1 contender to the X-Division title on the two-hour primetime special on November 3. Just to add to that, Jeff Jarrett brings Larry Zbyszko with him to announce that also on November 3, he will be getting his NWA world title rematch with Rhino.
Christopher Daniels vs. Jerrelle Clark
Glorified squash as Clark gets in a few dropkicks here and there to keep it competitive. Daniels lands on his feet to prevent a monkey flip and then catches Clark with an STO. Another brief comeback by Clark until he misses a Lionsault. ANGEL’S WINGS. That is all. (2:32) Good match to put some heat back on Daniels after the PPV loss. *
In the back, Shane Douglas is dying to get a reaction out of Raven for all that has happened to him over the last six weeks. Before he can answer, Cassidy Riley jumps in and questions Raven as to whether or not Rhino was right about that girl getting into his head. So Cassidy gets a pimp slap and Raven walks away.
AJ Styles & Sonjay Dutt vs. Alex Shelley & Roderick Strong
AJ starts off with Shelley with a little feeling out time. Tag to Sonjay for a drop toe hold and jumping knee drop combo. Sonjay is all about water sprinklers for some reason. Anyways, Shelley spinning heel kicks him away and tags Strong. Sonjay fires back with a satellite headscissors for two. Commercials! When we return, Coach Scott D’Amore yells at Tenay and West about the Ultimate X rematch coming up on November 3. It’s not fair! Back in the ring, AJ spits in Roderick’s face from the apron. Sonjay tries a Quebrada, but Strong catches him and then spins him around for a Canadian backbreaker. Geez! Shelley comes in for a double-team without a tag and takes a headscissors for his troubles from Sonjay. HOT TAG TO AJ! Pele Kick to Shelley! Pumphandle gutbuster to Strong gets two. Shelley breaks up the pin and shoves AJ into a uranage backbreaker by Strong. Sonjay grabs Shelley and gives him the Old School Water Sprinkler nonsense. To the floor, Sonjay tries the sliding headscissors under the bottom rope, but Shelley knows it coming and yanks Sonjay out. Meanwhile in the ring, Styles avoids a powerbomb and delivers the STYLES CLASH to Strong! Sonjay tackles Shelley while the ref counts three. (10:00) Solid match with non-stop action. **½
Backstage, 3 Live Kru show up in Larry Zbyszko’s makeshift looking office. They want a rematch with Team Canada, so Larry Z says they will get it at Genesis. In comes Kip James. To prevent any shenanigans from Coach Scott D’Amore, he wants to be the special referee for the match. Zbyszko doesn’t seem to care for the idea too much. BG and Killings seem cool with it, but Konnan doesn’t even after what happened at Bound for Glory. So what was the POINT of that happening then? It ends up in one big argument as Truth has to physically remove Konnan from the room.
Neat little video package talking about the history of the NWA World Heavyweight Title airs.
NWA World Tag Team Champions America’s Most Wanted (w/Gail Kim) vs. 3 Live Kru
BG and Truth handle this one with Konnan as their second. Truth takes Storm’s hat to start and acts a fool. He wrestles with it on for a while until he drops Storm with a headscissors. Harris comes in to double-team, but Truth ducks the double-clothesline and dropkicks them out to the floor. He then takes them both out with a slingshot somersault dive. Back in, Gail Kim grabs hold of Truth’s foot off a whip to help turn the tide into AMW’s favor. Tenay announces the main event for Genesis. You can see what it is at the bottom of the recap. Short ‘face in peril’ segment leads to BG James getting the hot tag. Shake Rattle and Roll to Harris, but he misses the Shaky Knee Drop. They trade finisher attempts, which brings Gail Kim onto the apron. Konnan scares her away though. During all the chaos, Coach Scott D’Amore heads down with a hockey stick. Right behind him though is Kip James who takes the stick away and tosses it to BG. As he goes to whack Storm, Harris takes it away from him. BG turns back around into the LAST CALL for the 1-2-3. (4:03) Looks like Kip and Konnan get in each other’s face, but how can that be Kip’s fault? *½
Outside the studio, Team 3D arrive in a Chevy Suburban. Don’t go anywhere!
When we return, Team 3D make their way to the ring. Time to hear what they thought of their funeral. Most people don’t get to do that, ya know. Brother Ray says AMW left them for dead, but didn’t kill them. Big mistake. They heard about the fake funeral and how people were drinking beer and pissing in their caskets. AMW and Jeff Jarrett are public enemy #1 and will be dealt with at Genesis when they team up with Rhino. Brother Devon challenges another crew who was at the funeral at the primetime special: Team Canada. That brings them out to respond. Bobby Roode wants to fight Team 3D right now, which leads to a 5-on-2 beatdown. 3LK make the effective save this time. 3D to A1! Team 3D gets their hands on D’Amore, which brings out AMW and Jarrett to attack. Out comes Rhino to beat up Jarrett as we go off the air.
So three matches announced for the two-hour primetime special and already for the PPV!
