WWE Main Event Review
July 17, 2013 (Taped July 16, 2013)
Providence, RI at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center
Commentators: Josh Matthews and The Miz
-Main Event open, with full pyro
-Josh Matthews welcomes us to Main Event. Christian’s music hits, so he’ll be in action two weeks in a row. His opponent? FAN…DAN…GO. Fandango drains the life out of his entrance. I mean, he takes his SWEET time. Finally, the bell rings. This could be good.
1. Christian VS Fandango
-Christian and Fandango exchange some pleasantries during the opening minutes. Nothing fancy, nothing bad. We go to commercial 2:10 into the match.
-An ad for “Total Divas” airs.
-Back in Providence, Christian and Fandango continue their struggle. Back-and-forth action, no one can really gain any momentum. Christian rolls through and pins Fandango out of nowhere.
Winners: Christian in 7:10 (shown.) Match wasn’t long enough for much, but fine for the what it was. **.
-After a replay of the finish, Christian celebrates on the ramp.
-CM Punk/Paul Heyman/Brock Lesnar interaction from Raw is highlighted.
-To further the story, Paul Heyman will be a guest on MizTV this Friday on Smackdown!
-An ad for WWE SummerSlam airs.
-Back on Main Event, and it’s DIVAS time. The swank Bret Hart re-mix hits to bring out Natalya and Layla. They’ll be facing Alicia Fox and Aksana.
2. Natalya & Layla VS Alicia Fox & Aksana
-This match is SLOW…Natalya OWNS Aksana with some chain wrestling to start. Aksana grows weary of this and tags in Fox. She gets the same treatment, until Natalya tires of toying with her and tags in Layla. Layla has fun with Fox, slapping her behind, etc. The heels BRIEFLY gain control, but not for long. Aksana gets distracted, Layla catches her and gets the 3 count.
Winners: Layla & Natalya in 5:26. The faces didn’t take the heels seriously, and this match suffered because of it. ½.
-Did You Know?...the WWE has nine of the top ten sports DVDs in America. The “WCW WarGames” DVD is number one.
-We re-live Cena picking Bryan as his opponent at SummerSlam. A graphic for the match follows.
-Back inside the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, here comes Justin Gabriel! Haven’t seen him here on Main Event in a while. He’s in action, next.
-Download the “Rockpocalypse” app now!
-And…watch The Miz do commentary on Main Event on ION Television…right now, on ION Television!
-This Friday on Smackdown! IC title match, as Curtis Axel will defend against Chris Jericho.
-Back in the ring, Gabriel awaits…the 3MB? Can’t he wrestle someone BESIDES one of the 3MB? Ugh, let’s see how this goes.
3. Justin Gabriel VS Heath Slater
-Maybe something can happen. Something special. Even though it seems these two have wrestled each other (seemingly) 4,274 times. Chain wrestling galore to start things. A “highlight” is the two wrestlers having a “howl-off,” which has NO business being in the middle of a match. The crowd responded with deafening silence. Slater sends Gabriel outside, and we go to break 3:53 into the match.
-Back from commercial, Slater gives Gabriel a big kick to the gut. Justin takes back over….then, the lights go out. Interesting. AND HERE COMES THE WYATT FAMILY! Making their Main Event debut, Bray leads out his family. The lights come up, and Heath nails a shot to Justin from behind, proverbially “throwing him to the wolves,” as he gets knocked into the waiting Wyatt’s. Slater and the rest of the 3MB try to escape, but to no avail. Yeah, this match is WAY over.
Winner: No Contest in 7:58. The Wyatt Family’s appearance alone gives this match a *, as this match was basic by-the-book wrestling, with no sizzle, before their appearance.
-The Wyatt’s eventually end their beatdown by stacking up all four people they targeted (Gabriel, Slater, McIntyre and Mahal) as Bray cuts a promo. “Kane…follow the buzzards,” he ends the promo. Suddenly, the screen flashes black. That’s all, folks.
FINAL THOUGHTS: This episode’s wrestling was WAY below last week’s standards. None of the matches tonight got out of first gear, or silliness for that matter. The Wyatt Family was the only bright point of the show. * ½ for this episode.
This will also be my final WWE Main Event review. I’ve taken another job, so now I’m working two jobs, plus trekking back to KSU next month to resume classes. So, I simply have no more time to do the recaps each week. Thank you to Graham for posting my reviews. The ones that read my reviews on the message board each week. And most of all, you the reader, for trying to decipher most of my ramblings about WWE Main Event. Hope you’ve enjoyed it. God bless.
