Friday Night Smackdown!
July 3, 2009
Jim Ross and Todd Grisham
Todd welcomes us to Fresno and the controversy surrounding World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk. Speaking of Punk, the champ makes his way to the ring after what happened at the Bash. Punk gets a chorus of boos. Punk says he knows everybody’s talking about the Bash, and he’s sick and tired of everyone saying he purposely kicked the ref to get disqualified. He wants to break it down step by step. First off, Punk says Jeff Hardy was not screwed at the Bash, as Punk’s leg was clearly under the bottom rope after the Swanton Bomb. We go back to the Bash match and Jeff Hardy elbowing Punk in the eye and the kick to Brad Armstrong’s back. Punk says he was the one that almost got screwed. Punk says it’s clear he couldn’t see when he accidentally kicked the ref. We go back to the Bash match and Jeff Hardy’s post-match attack on Punk. Punk says Jeff Hardy has no idea what kind of person Punk is. Punk says he takes no shortcuts and no cheap shots. Punk says what Jeff did was uncalled for. Punk says Jeff Hardy’s been telling everybody who will listen that he wants a World Title rematch. Punk is cool with that, if Jeff Hardy will apologize for the post match attack at the Bash. Punk wants his apology right now. Instead, out comes suspended GM Teddy Long. Teddy says he’s not sure if what Punk did was intentional at the Bash. Teddy says regardless, there will be a rematch at Night of Champions between Jeff Hardy and CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship. Punk says that’s fine but he wants an apology from Jeff Hardy. Teddy says he won’t be taking any part in tha, but he is making tonight’s main event: Unified WWE Tag Champs Edge & Chris Jericho vs. CM Punk & Jeff Hardy. From there the #1 contender Jeff Hardy comes out and tells Punk he can see right through him and that Punk is a liar. Punk says unless Jeff’s next words are “I’m sorry”, Punk doesn’t care what Jeff has to say. Jeff says he’ll apologize. He’ll apologize for kicking Punk’s ass at Night of Champions. Jeff pushes him, Punk pushes back, but then Punk cools off and says to Jeff that tonight they have to be partners, and on the same page. Punk says he can read Jeff’s face that he wants to punch him in the face. Punk says Jeff needs to take advice he should have took a long time ago: JUST SAY NO. So Punk is starting to creep the heel “Straight Edge” philosophy in. I saw that side of him in Ring of Honor and its awesome. Punk just leaves the ring and we go to break.
-The first of probably many Raw promos for tonight: Cena vs. HHH for the title shot with Randy Orton at Night of Champions.

Glad to see Finlay back on Smackdown, who hasn’t been on in a while. Had a great 20-plus minute match with Rey Mysterio in late 2007 on Smackdown. Edge comes on the screen and says worry about that match next week. Tonight its about their opponents, who are clearly not on the same page. Jericho rips Punk as a liar, then rips the crowd as parasites, and gelatinous worms.
